Demetri stood outside of his home. The soft breeze blew through his hair and the sounds of the night animals filled his ears. He was in complete peace.
His gaze shifted from the serene landscape towards the enterance to his home. . . their home. A place that had once been as empty as his life, now was full of life and warmth. The laughter of his mate, Leoun, filled his heart with joy. His sons squealed as their mother no doubtingly chased them for their baths.
His mouth twitched as he tried not to smile. He probably should go in and help her. His mind made up, Demetri walked towards the door until a scent stopped him in his tracks. Something was off.
The wolf within him became restless, its growls alerting him to the unwanted presence.
Demetri. The sound of his name caused him to jump. The voice was all too familiar. Its eerie whisper caused the very blood in his veins to freeze.
"Demetri Amadon Wolfheart. Well, it is a pleasure to meet you at last." The voice came from all around him, his eyes searched but found nothing.
"I've heard so much about you. Your little endeavor with your own sister. Even taking the young little Leoun. It is tempting to take something so. . . ripe. Isnt it?"
Demetri growled, "Show yourself."
"Gladly. But first, I must pay my respects to your dear mate."
No! Adrenaline rushed within his veins as he rushed inside.
"Leoun? Leoun!"
"What, what is it Demi?"Pure relief rushed through him. Leoun walked into the room, their children following suit, sporting amused faces.
"N-nothing." Was it all in his head? Gods, he hoped not. . . the last time he started hearing voices in his head. . . He didn't want to revisit the moments of confusion and sorrow.
"Demi, what's wrong?" He blinked as she placed a calming hand on his cheek. Her eyes full of concern and worry, she searched for an answer.
Should he tell her? He wasn't even sure if what he heard was real. But if he didn't. . . and he ended up harming her.
His wolf snarled, snapping him out of his thoughts. Right. . . He doubted it would ever let harm come to her. Which gave him a bit of relief.
"Yes, I just. . . thought I heard something. But everything is fine."
She wasn't convinced. If it weren't for the boys cries, she probably would have delved further into a situation he wasn't sure he wanted to talk about.
"Alright boys." Her gaze lingered on him for a while before ushering the kids back into the bathroom.
He let out a breath he didn't know he was holding. It's fine, Demetri. Just. . . walk it off.
He made his way back out, his mind somehow reached out for an explanation to the voice. Noone could be out here. No one. They lived in a secluded area, there was no way someone would find them.
"Oh, Demetri. You're losing it bud." Before he could react, Demi was hit hard from the side. The force was enough to knock the air out of him, but he stood his ground. His eyes searched for an enemy, finding none, he resorted to his other senses. There was no scent in the air. He's staying down wind from me. . . Before another assault could be dealt, he spun on his feet. His hands raised quick enough to ward off a strike. The wolf howled in triumph as he twisted his hold and was able to take the assailant into his grasp.
He was met by a male, his hair as dark as it could be, his eyes a bright red.
"Oh, congragulations. You caught yourself a demon."
"Hurry up and get clean, the both of you."
ReplyDeleteIt was always such an odd routine the boys would play and really Leoun was at fault for indulging in their little ritual. Zephyr and Ryder were the mischievous duo; they did practically anything to elicit a reaction from their mother and running away from bath time was one of them. Nevertheless, once they were in the water, they were impossible to get out.
"Mommy! The baby needs a bath, too!" insisted little Ryder, reaching over with a soaked hand as he padded the small bulge of Leoun's stomach.
Leoun smiled. "Yes, you're right Ryder. We'll have to wait until its born first before it can get baths, though."
"How long do we have to wait?" Zephyr pressed.
"Soon," was Leoun's habitual reply. After the while the boys had learned to take the answer as it was and immediately went back to playing in the sudsy waters of the bathtub. Yet, even the sweet laughter of her beloved children could not completely drown out the concern Leoun felt. Demetri had never called her name with such urgency in a long time, not to mention how pale and shaken he'd seemed when she met his fervent summons. To have frightened him as it did... it couldn't have just been simply "nothing."
She couldn't just let this go. Rising to her feet, Leoun bade the children to behave themselves as she stepped out of the bathroom and shut the door. Of all the things in the world, at least a two-way connection would be nice to have. Her thoughts were always laid bare for Demetri to sift through and see... so why was it when he needed her most, Leoun couldn't even comprehend where it was she had start.
"Well, well... speak of the vampire."
Leoun's eyes snapped up at the sound of the voice, foreign and maliciously sultry in nature. Her gaze immediately came to land upon Demetri, who held a male in his hand by the throat. Both of their sights, one of startled ocean blue and the other of deep vengeful red, turned to Leoun at once.
"Leoun!" bellowed Demetri, the urgency in his voice nearly making Leoun jump. "Get yourself to safety and go back to the boys!"
"Mmm... so it is true," came the groveled voice of the red-eyed man, stealing both Demetri and Leoun's attention instantly. "Her scent IS potent."
A snarl escaped from Demetri's lips at those words, the muscles in his arm becoming increasingly more taut as the grip upon the man tightened astronomically. When it seemed Demetri was just shy of snapping the intruder's neck, the latter suddenly let out a bone-chilling cackle.
"Nice try," was all he said before he struck with all the grace and speed of a viper. In one fluid motion, the man brought his leg up and connected right in the side of Demetri's face, causing him to topple until he was completely underneath the figure of his no-longer-captive. It wasn't until then that it finally registered what just happened.
"Demetri!" cried Leoun, a burning fire flowing through her veins at once as, poising her hand to strike at the infernal intruder, the vampire leapt immediately in the promise of battle.
